HTML5 Giving the Web a Facelift (Article #8)

HTML5 Games, Video Get Boost From Full-Screen API in Firefox Nightly

Ryan Paul

November 14, 2011

Firefox has allowed web applications to be able to toggle their web browsers into full-screen mode essentially stretching a single website page to fit a users screen. This will help out HTML5 coders in a way that they can code their video playbacks so that this new feature can be incorporated and work with their design. Mozilla has set up preventions for this full-screen element to go into effect on its own, it has to have the users consent. The user must first agree to a pop-up window and then be able to continue to surf the web/website.

Relevance to Class
This new feature is important now that Flash is being taken off mobile devices and perhaps clients may not want to use Flash all together on their website. This new feature helps coders incorporate this toggle between regular screen and full-screen view. This adds a special element to their design with ease. For those who are going into coding and especially those who are learning HTML5, this is important information to have.

Key Quotes
Mozilla has taken a few steps to prevent abuse of the new API. A web application can’t arbitrarily make an element full-screen without user intervention — the operation has to be initiated by a user action. The mechanism that is used to enforce that safeguard is said to work much like a pop-up blocker.

iOS 5 Making a Big Splash (Article Review #4)

The New Features of iOS5 Straight from the Apple Conference

Ryan Burch

October 5th, 2011

Apple is forever giving their OS's a face lift, tweaking some apps, fixing some of its glitches and adding new features that make it standout from their last creation. Apple has announced their new OS5. This new OS has a card app that let's you make your photos into greeting cards and have them printed and shipped to whom you desire. Notifications on the device are new as well. With the older OS version, a big notification window used to take over the current application you were in, OS5 give you an option of swiping down the window/tab, much like Androids, to check the notification or give you a list of all other emails and notifications that you may not have checked. The iMessage has been added as well resembling the RIM version of Blackberry Messenger. This allows iPhones to communicate with iPads and even iPods. No more looking for a third party application to help communicate between Apple devices. They also spiced up the calendar; a reminder trigger app is much like a calendar but you are now able to tag a location to the reminder and whenever you come near to said tagged location, the app will notify you. The camera is a 8mpx, using the lock button as a short cut to the camera so that it takes the trouble out of the user having to unlock the phone first to gain access to the camera. A feature that may please to slowly dying out paper/magazine lover is that Apple has published an app for popular magazines and periodicals such as Allure, GQ, The New York Times, and Vanity Fair.

Relevance to Class
This OS is a big thing to the computer industry. Yes, it may catch the attention of many with it's practical new features and improvements but above all that, this is the last OS Steve Jobs had input in. Recognized as a pioneer in the personal computer revolution, we must admire and in all actuality thank him for he was the one who paved the way we operate with all our current  electronics one way or another. Apple is taking over the world, one gadget at a time.

Key Quote
To round it all off, iOS5 is bringing in two more features to make devices even more wireless. the PC Free feature allows IOS devices to be setup out of the box without being connected to a computer and users will now be able to do wireless iOS updates. The other part s support for iCloud (more on that later). Devices that will support iOS5 when it releases include iPhone4 and 3GS, iPad1 and 2, and iPod Tough 3rd and 4th Generation.

Fiery New Device (Article Review #3)

Why the Kindle Fire is No iPad Killer

John Paul Titlow

September 29th, 2011

Amazon has released their new version of their tablet called the Kindle Fire. Its retail price is $199, less than half the cost of an iPad retailing in at $499. Amazon was careful not to compare themselves to the megaminds of those in Apple as to proclaim them as the #1 tablet out to date. The device has evident differences. For one, pricing; two, screen size; three, no camera or microphone as opposed to the iPad. The Amazon Fire was designed to be just a media-consumption device meaning that browsing, video chat and gaming will not be its selling points yet promoting more activities such as reading and streaming. Customers will have access to the Amazon’s Appstore for Android. Although the Amazon Fire may be no iPad and have difficulties winning over hardcore Apple fans, one thing the Fire has that the iPad doesn’t, it supports flash.

Relevance to Class
This break through of the Amazon Fire may not be the biggest story one has heard but it worth giving it a look. We all have devices such as iPads that work wonders, but some of us cant afford it. The Amazon Fire is a great innovative way of giving consumers that foot in the door with the rest of the computer geeks. Although yes there are major differences such as it only being able to run off WiFi, I believe that this can push many people into the direction of literature. As a web based class, we obviously focus on the Internet and what it has to offer us but forgetting where it all came from. Amazon is trying to push consumers into literacy.

Key Quote
This is Amazon's first foray into offering hardware beyond a simple e-reader. Apple has been doing this for years. Not only has it amassed a rabid following of dedicated customers, but Apple has begun building out its ecosystem so that it spans devices. With iOS 5, which will go live in a few weeks, the content on Apple devices will sync wirelessly. In the latest version of Mac OS X, the desktop has started to feel more like its multitouch devices.
The more tightly Apple ties those devices together, the more challenging it will for any competitor to pluck away users from any one device. Amazon has a tablet. But Apple has a tablet that fits in perfectly with its smartphone, music player, desktops and laptops. They're even rumored to have an HDTV on the way.

Pulling the Plug on Electronics (Article Review #2)

West Virginia town touts itself as haven for people seeking relief from wireless devices

Larry McShane

September 14th, 2011

Imagine living in a secluded area where there are no cell phones, no television, no lights, no electricity all together. Green Bank, West Virginia is a small village ringing in at one hundred forty three in population and home of the he-man electronics-hating club. Residents of this village have moved here because they believe living around electronic and/or living amongst those who use electronics heavily is a hazard to their health.

Diane Schou is a self proclaimed Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity, a medical condition not recognized by the medical community. The symptoms of Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity are headache, fatigue, stress, sleep disturbance, skin symptoms like prickling, burning sensation and rashes, pain and ache in muscles and many more health problems. She lives in a small village in the Allegheny Mountains that is located in the United States Radio Quiet Zone where wireless is banned across 13,000 square miles. This area was chosen because it has a hilly topography that screens out most incoming radio signals, allowing the Green Bank telescopes to receive signals that are otherwise too low in power to be heard over the normal radio background in North America. She states that moving to this remote village from an Iowa farm "has allowed (her) to be more of a normal person". Nicholas Fox also relocated after she was convinced that her computer was giving off radiation and affecting her well-being.

Five percent of Americans believe that they are being affected with Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity. The World Health Organization has not linked the symptoms with the hazard of being exposed to electronic devices.

Relevance to Class
I believe that these people who are isolating themselves are hypochondriacs. Although they just may feel that the radiation given off electronic devices are harming tem it could very well all be in their mind. It’s a good thing to know that people, or a whole village may I say, exist in the world. Its fascinating to see that the United States actually has an area for them to dwell. Their completely cut off from the world and that’s fine by them.

Key Quote
For Diane Schou, it's almost heaven: A place where she's free from the electromagnetic fields that she believes caused a variety of physical ailments.
"It's a horrible thing to have to be a prisoner," Schou told the BBC News about her Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS).
"You become a technological leper because you can't be around people. It's not that you would be contagious to them. It's what they're carrying that is harmful to you."

Snail Connection in the Potato State (Article Review #1)

Downloads Are Slowest in Idaho, Study Finds

Katharine Q. Seelye

September 13th, 2011

As New Yorkers we heavily rely on our high speed Internet to work efficiently and of course when we need it, in the now. Doesn't matter what time of day it is, we expect our connection to be up and running and our web pages to load up in a blink of an eye. Well, if you’re a New Yorker visiting the potato state, then you’re out of luck because you'll be ripping your hair out waiting as the screen reads, "BUFFERING". Idaho resident Barry Ramsay, owns a small manufacturing company wedged between two mountains. He experienced a connection crash because it seems bears had rubbed up against the towers. It takes residents three times longer for a music file to download than Rhode Island residents who rank in at 3.36 seconds for a single file.

Ms. Gilliam, Idaho resident, said that “it feels like it’s moving in slow motion”; “a lot of times I'll start downloads and not complete them.” Although the slow connection bothers her, she’s more concerned about being able to receive her e-mail. Idaho also has a small population with an average of nineteen people per square mile, opposed to Rhode Island, which has more than 1,018 people per square mile. These types of numbers push providers away because they don’t want to waste product, supplies, and labor just to reach one or two households; it’s a money gamble that they’re not willing to take. Not only does these issues affect download but also it goes as far as affecting the educational needs of students. Schools were kept open late for the community to use the computer labs but ever since the budget cuts, school hours have been cut back, depriving students from reaching their full potential. Our future is in the hands of this generation, why not make it better.

Relevance to class
I believe that this article relates to class because we are learning about user experience, which pertains to the architecture of a web page that is projected on a device to the user. These users can’t view the web page if the connection is slow. This is an issue that must be corrected immediately in order for the residents of Idaho to surf the web. This limits the resources/ information exchanged from Idaho and other states.

Key Quote
In Idaho, it would take you 9.42 seconds to download a standard music file compared with 3.36 seconds in Rhode Island, the state with the fastest average speeds, at 894 kilobytes per second.
The slowest city, by the way, was also in Idaho: In Pocatello, it would take nearly 12 seconds to download that music file, according to the study by Pando Networks, a company that helps consumers accelerate downloads. In the nation's fastest city, Andover, Mass., a Boston suburb, it would take just over one second.

Such speed distinctions might seem insignificant. But with larger files, downloading delays of just a few seconds can stretch into crucial minutes or hours and over time result in losses across many aspects of life, some experts say, beyond entertainment and games, affecting fields such as public safety, education and economic growth. It is not clear how many households throughout this state still have no Internet, but nationally, the figure is 28 percent - most of them in rural areas.

"We have a guy here who was dropped into remote, isolated areas of Iraq to set up their telecommunications systems," said Christine L. Frei, director of the Clearwater Economic Development Association in Lewiston. "He told me, 'We had better communications in Iraq than you have in central Idaho.' "
